Who we are

Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. St. John's United Methodist Church is a beautiful, historic church that has provided ministry in the name of Jesus Christ since 1839. St. John's strives to be an inclusive community of faith that is called to worship God, to make disciples of Jesus Christ, and to support those disciples in their walks of faith. We are a welcoming body of worshippers striving to live in Christ's image right in the heart of Richmond, Texas. We value learning, we value fellowship, and we value our community. What We BElieve

Please click the photo next to each item to learn more about the beliefs of the United Methodist Church.

  • About God

God is real and loving. God desires a personal relationship with us. God never leaves us even when we make mistakes. We experience God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • About Jesus Christ

Jesus is the Son of God. He was born and lived on earth in human form and provided an example of Christian living. He died on the cross, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven. Through His death our sins can be forgiven.

  • About the Holy Spirit

When we accept Jesus Christ in our lives, the Holy Spirit becomes alive in us, guiding us and helping us to live lives that are obedient and enabling us to share that life with others. We are inspired to live lives that are in Christ’s image.

  • About Human Nature

As humans, we are capable of forming a loving, personal relationship with God. When we sin, that connection is damaged. Through God’s grace and our faith, the connection can be restored.

  • About Grace

Grace, a gift that comes from a loving God through faith, is available to all people. Humans have free will to accept or reject this “gift” of the forgiveness of our sins through the death of Jesus Christ. We can access this grace through public and private prayer, worship, fellowship, Holy Communion, Baptism, Bible study and works of mercy and compassion.

  • About the Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word and is the primary authority for our faith and practice.

  • About Baptism

Baptism is a sign of new life and God’s love and forgiveness for us. Through baptism we are joined with the church and with Christians everywhere. A person of any age may be baptized. The sacrament of baptism is done once. The United Methodist Church recognizes the baptisms of other Christian denominations.

  • About Holy Communion

Communion is a holy meal that symbolizes the body and blood of Christ. It is the opportunity to renew our connection with Christ. We practice open communion which means anyone can participate. By sharing this meal, we give thanks for Christ’s sacrifice and are nourished and empowered to go into the world in mission and ministry.
